Welcome to the first LAAD Newsletter!
In this age of endless bad news, data overload, and rampant disinformation, staying informed is more difficult than ever. Stay informed we must, however. Democracy cannot survive a citizenry driven to apathy and cynicism by the exponential proliferation of disinformation. The Stalinist occupation of Lithuania demonstrated that even in the pre-digital age, political lies, propaganda, and electoral subversion had the power to snuff out a country’s independence without firing a shot. Concise information from reliable sources is the way out of this mess. The LAAD newsletters are brief summaries (5-minute reads) of articles by reputable journalists, academics and civil servants that analyze the most consequential threats to our democracy today. Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
